An increased focus on sustainability in the maritime industry

With the maritime industry facing the most intense and rapid environmental regulatory changes in its history, our CEO and founder Dr. Mario Michan discusses the need to future-proof assets.

There are significant pressure and increased focus on sustainability, air pollution elimination, and decarbonisation within the maritime industry. Shipowners and operators are likely to face tightening of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) regulations that will force the industry to use alternatives to fossil fuels or abate their impact.

It is reasonable to predict further restrictions on NOx, SOx, Particulate Matter, and black carbon, all alongside the mission to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2050.

Within this framework, it is important for shipowners and operators to future proof their assets with technology that ensures compliance with future regulations. Outdated, decades-old, solutions, such as wet water scrubbers, can no longer be relied on for this purpose.

A re-thinking of expectations around the ability of exhaust gas cleaning systems to achieve regulatory requirements is needed. Not only can the industry meet and exceed the IMO’s targets, but it can also benefit from new technology that can enhance the environmental performance of current and future fuels. Complimenting this, using EGCSs with HFO results in 35% less CO2 emissions than LSFO due to less energy being used in refineries to produce the fuel.

Daphne Technology is proud to have developed a new type of abatement technology that can simultaneously eliminate all air pollutants, to tackle shipping’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) and air pollution.

In this article in ship.energy, our CEO and founder Dr. Mario Michan explains the role of innovative pollution, fuel and vessel agnostic solutions in achieving this aim.
