Carbon Capture and Storage

Daphne Technology is one of the partners in the Green Shipping Programme and participates in the pilot “Carbon Capture and Storage systems on ships". Capture and storage of CO2, both on land and on board ships, can play a distinct role in reducing GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

The programme's vision is to develop and strengthen Norway's goal to establish the world's most efficient and environmentally friendly shipping. The Green Shipping Programme perform studies, start pilots, and transfer knowledge between theory and practice. They facilitate dialogue and collaboration between all stakeholders. The Green Shipping Programme is an initiative by DNV to gather the maritime industry to escalate investment in green shipping.

Carbon capture systems on ships

To achieve the targets set by the Paris Agreement and the climate ambitions of the IMO and the Norwegian Government, all possibilities of reducing CO2 emissions should be thoroughly considered.

However, can CO2 be captured and stored - also on-board ships?

Several questions related to capture and store carbon on ships is being raised. Some related to technology, costs, energy consumption, and not least to space requirements for storage of CO2 on board the vessel. Furthermore, there are unanswered questions related to unloading the CO2 from the ship. How should onshore infrastructure and infrastructure related to final storage be maintained?

In light of the growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, research and development on CCS systems (Carbon Capture and Storage) that can be used onboard ships has gained momentum in recent years. To investigate the current and future potential for the use of carbon capture systems on ships, a GSP pilot related to this topic has been initiated.

The objectives of the pilot

The pilot aims to investigate the technical and economic scope of carbon capture systems on ships. The overall objective is the installation of a carbon capture system onboard one of Altera's ships. The system must be scalable and can be used for vessels of different sizes that use different types of gas or oil products for propulsion.

Altera Infrastructure, Daphne Technology, Equinor, Total, Moss Maritime, Wärtsilä, Brevik Engineering, DFDS, Norsea Group, the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and DNV.

The Paris Agreement was set in 2015 and entered into force in 2016 to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2oC above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5oC, which means that global emissions need to fall to a net-zero by mid-century.

IMO (the International Maritime Organisation) has committed to reducing GHG emissions from international shipping. The IMOs GHG strategy is to reduce the total annual GHG emissions from international shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. Through IMO regulations, the maritime industry has been forced to take action in reducing emissions from ships.

Daphne Technology is working towards being the world's first technology to provide a single solution for all forms of pollutant emissions in flue gas: SOX, NOX, CH4, N2O, and CO2. The CO2 solution is our earliest development, still in very early stages but with very promising results.
